The future of the flood-affected people in the Jonai Shivguri region remains uncertain.

There is no clear indication from the government on when they will begin the process of rehabilitation.

Around four months ago, the devastating floods completely destroyed the Shivguri area. During the floods, the administration rescued over 50 families from the Shivguri region and arranged temporary shelter for them at the Jonai Model Flood Camp. However, even after four months, there has been no concrete plan for the rehabilitation of these displaced families, leaving them to live in uncertainty day and night.

Although the administration is providing basic supplies such as rice, lentils, potatoes, and salt, there is a severe lack of nutritious food, affecting young children and women in particular. The problem extends beyond food; there is also a shortage of proper clothing for both children and women. Despite being called a "model" flood camp, it lacks adequate facilities. The makeshift plastic bathrooms and toilets have completely deteriorated, causing significant challenges for women and young girls. Additionally, overcrowding in single homes, with more than 50 families living together, has led to various problems, especially for women and girls, increasing fears of potential untoward incidents.

Amidst all these issues, the unhygienic environment surrounding the camp has become unbearable due to foul odors. The people living in the camp are enduring this unsanitary condition, which poses a significant risk of illness. On Monday, a team from the Okajan-based NGO RVC arrived at the Jonai Model Flood Camp and conducted a cleanliness drive. The RVC team, along with the camp residents, worked to clean the surroundings. Citing the unhealthy conditions, they called on the government, through media channels, to take immediate steps for the rehabilitation of these displaced families. The affected families also appealed to the government for urgent rehabilitation measures.
